Song Spotlights

The stories behind the songs on our debut album Go Again.

|| 01. S T A N D A R D S || Women often hold themselves to unrealistic standards. It seems default to loathe our flaws and secretly compare and compete with each other. This song is about embracing our flaws, letting go of perfectionism and choosing vulnerability and reality, instead of giving in to the lie that we have to be all things to everyone at all times. My favourite line, one that I remind myself of regularly is: "Contentment is calling but you're busy falling from heights you've constructed in fear that you'll always be plain." No one is plain, no one is perfect, so let's all hang out in the middle and experience together the beauty that emerges. ♡ Esther

|| 02. T I M E || This is a song I wrote years ago. It's about realising that you're not going to live forever and that time doesn't stop for any of us. But with that realisation comes the wonder of new beginnings and new life. To see that I'm only a very small part in an ongoing story helps me to keep perspective on the day to day. Rhys

|| 03. M Y P E O P L E || This song is inspired by a Jewish orphan who as a young woman became the Queen of Persia around 480-470 BC. Her name was Esther and I am named after her. Her people were about to face genocide and Esther found the courage to use her position to save them. This meant risking her own life but the Bible records her cousin saying something along the lines of "perhaps you came into this position for such a time as this." She spoke up, exposed an evil plan and the King had mercy on her people. "My People" is my attempt at capturing what I can learn from her story to live out in my own. ♡ Esther

|| 04. G O A G A I N || I wrote this song for some friends going through a turbulent, tough and uncertain time. We often desire to prevent our loved ones from experiencing pain but can just end up feeling helpless. When your heart breaks for others, when you show up and sit in the uncertainty with them, when you imperfectly attempt to embody 'caring' not just speak about it...your capacity to love gets even greater and you become a life giving voice that says: "Get up my friend, we can go again." ♡ Esther

|| 05. W E A R Y H A N D S || I love reading and this song is a mix of a few stories. One of my favourite authors, G.K Chesterton, writes in an introduction about a story that he never got to finish. It's the story of a boy who grew up on a farm at the foot of a mountain and went on a journey to find giants. After travelling for an age he looks back at his little farmhouse in the distance and sees that the mountain is actually a giants castle. It was too large and too close to be seen at home...
This is a song of perspective.
This is a song of coming home.
This is a song of wonder and welcome.

|| 06. B Y & B Y || The film ‘To Write Love On Her Arms’ is based on the true story of Renee Yohe. It follows her journey through depression, self harm and drug use and the start of the @twloha movement. This song is a direct emotional response after watching the film. I sat down and wrote a kind of letter to the main character, trying to come to terms with the headstart I had in life, how much pain some people have to work through and the responsibility we all have to care for each other. Rhys

|| 07. C H O O S E W E L L || Self-sufficiency is a constant temptation, especially for those that say they have a faith in God. In a time where I was waiting for work as a casual teacher, nervous about no income and seeking security I felt God say "Trust me. I will provide." He did. More than enough. I just had to push past the lie that I had to to do it all on my own. Fast forward a few years and Rhys and I are living in a van, with no fixed income and lots of unexpected challenges. I hear the same thing from God, "Trust me. I will provide." All I know is that He does, often in ways I don't expect. Choose Well is about this ongoing conversation with God. ♡ Esther

|| 08. R O U T I N E || Beginning with the perils of Pinterest, this song was a bit of an experiment stylewise and is all about embracing the mess of life and letting go of the desire for it to be perfect. ♡ Esther

|| 09. T H E M O R E Y O U K N O W || 'Its funny how in life you know, the more you know the less you know.' Somedays that feels like my life motto or something. Every answer I find uncovers a bunch more questions. Every time I think I've figured life out I get thrown for six. This song is about trying to recognise what I have and be thankful for it. Trying to rest in trust. Rhys

|| 10. S T A R T I N G O V E R || I wrote this song exploring whether humans are inherently good or bad. I didn't find an answer but decided the best we can do is own our mistakes as quickly as possibly so that we can get on with life and hopefully make a few less mistakes tomorrow. Rhys
